China used just over one trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity in July 2025, an increase of about 8.6% compared with the same month last year. No country has ever reached that level before. What's remarkable is not only the size of the demand but also the fact that the State Grid kept running without major failures.
Putting the Numbers in Context
To see how extraordinary this is, think about the global picture. All the countries in the world together consumed around 32 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2024. One single month in China now accounts for roughly three percent of that entire year's usage. For perspective, the United States-another heavy power user-burns through about 4.6 trillion kilowatt-hours annually, which works out to less than 400 billion per month. China's July total was more than double that.
Why China's Grid Didn't Crack
For many countries, a surge of this scale would have caused rolling blackouts. Recent examples make this clear. A heatwave in Spain last April left about two-thirds of the country without power when demand outstripped supply. Rome and other European cities also experienced smaller outages this summer. And New Yorkers still remember July 2019, when parts of Manhattan went dark for hours, shutting down subways and cutting short a Jennifer Lopez concert.
China, by contrast, managed to avoid any comparable disruption. Even as usage climbed to record highs, the grid stayed balanced. Behind that stability is a combination of massive generating capacity and a nationwide transmission network built to move electricity quickly across long distances.
Decades of Expansion
This resilience didn't come overnight. In the early 1950s and 60s, electricity shortages were routine. Cities and villages alike had to ration power. In 1949, the country could generate less than two million kilowatts in total. By 1962, the figure was still only ten million. Today, the number has ballooned to 3.65 billion kilowatts-almost two hundred times greater. That expansion laid the foundation for handling today's demand.
A Grid That Works Like a Web
China's geography creates a challenge: much of the electricity is generated inland, while demand is concentrated in the coastal provinces. To bridge that gap, China has built one of the most advanced transmission systems anywhere. The network functions like a giant web, channeling electricity to the regions that need it most. Thanks to high-voltage technology, the system continues running steadily even during heatwaves and other stress tests.
